Karen and I headed up to Arrowhead Provincial park for our most anticipated camping trip of the year. We were taking our Grandson Odin camping for the week. 3 days at Arrowhead and the remainder at KillBear provincial park (next blog). We chose Arrowhead for a few reasons, firstly it is very close to Odin’s home town of Bracebridge (important in the event that he becomes homesick and wants to go home) and the park has multiple beaches and borders the Great East River – both very kid friendly..
The site (244) was a great pick, large very private and about 100 metres from the shower house – important for my early morning post coffee treks! The only problem we had with the site, was that the electrical hook up was ridiculously far away. We have two 30 amp cables (because we got caught short once at Presquile Park a few years ago) Even with 130 ft of cable we were short, thankfully a near by campground had 50 ft 30 amp cables on sale.
First morning camping with Odin had to include a good breakfast (good tasting..not necessarily good for you!) a little bacon and French toast, breakfast of champions. We were informed that there was a special appearance at nearby Santa’s Village…Peppa Pig and her brother George were visiting (If you do not know what I am talking about..you are missing out on a treat – I was to spend many hours over the next week enjoying the company of Peppa pig and jumping in muddy puddles)
We spent most of the day at Santa’s Village, Odin loved it (We had borrowed Kali’s season passes, which made it worthwhile – not sure it would have been worth the admission price) We had about a 40 minute wait for a photo op with Peppa, at which point Odin became star struck and would only go up with us.
On our last full day at Arrowhead we decided to take Odin on a canoe trip up the Big East River, a slow running river with some amazing sandbars, perfect for kids. The weather was great, sunny hot and perfect for lazy day river swimming.
Both Karen and I were thinking of an upgrade to our canoe, possibly a nice Swift Carbon fibre Keewaydin 18.6 with third seat. In carbon fusion it would weigh in at 39 Lbs, perfect for my weary back. May have our new ride by next summer…hint hint Karen.
We stopped at a great beach for lunch, and for a swim, Marcus was very concerned about Odin, and followed him around most of the day making sure he was ok.
At the end of the day, we headed back to the launch site, the return was with the current, so a much easier paddle, all in all a great day trip for anyone camping at Arrowhead Provincial park. Tomorrow we pack up and head for KillBear Provincial park (that’s is for another blog…
We enjoyed our stay at Arrowhead, and will return again. Odin really enjoyed his camping experience…next year we will try for a full month…
